Stockholm Syndrome in the Ummah

I’ve been thinking a lot lately, and I need to speak from the heart. As Muslims, living through this time, watching what’s happening across the world, it feels like we’ve lost something deep. Not just something minor. Something massive.
Since the Khilafah was abolished in 1924, the Ummah has been broken. Fragmented. Weak. For over a century we’ve been humiliated — politically, economically, spiritually. And worse than that, we’ve gotten so used to it, we’ve started acting like it’s normal.
Stockholm Syndrome: When the Oppressed Start Loving Their Oppressors
You know what Stockholm Syndrome is? It’s when someone is kidnapped or abused for so long that they start to sympathise with their captor. They stop resisting. They even start defending the very person hurting them.
Sounds extreme, right? But isn’t that exactly what we’ve done? We defend democracy. We defend borders drawn by colonisers. We defend leaders who openly sell our lands, suppress our deen, and shake hands with the enemies of Islam.
Allah says clearly in the Qur’an:
“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:3)
So why do we act like Islam isn’t enough?
Look Around You. The Ummah Is Bleeding
From Gaza to East Turkestan, from Kashmir to Balochistan the Muslim world is being torn apart:
• Gaza: Over 50,000 Muslims killed since October 2023. Babies buried under rubble. Masjids destroyed. The world watches in silence.
• Balochistan: Dozens martyred during Jumu’ah in bombings no one takes responsibility for.
• East Turkestan: Uighur Muslims locked in camps, stripped of their Qur’an, their Salah, their identity.
• Kashmir: Military rule, occupation, and constant surveillance — all while the world acts like it doesn’t exist.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The believers, in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion, are like one body. When one limb suffers, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)
But we’ve gone numb. We scroll past videos of airstrikes. We swipe away stories of orphans. It hurts for a moment, then we move on.
We’ve Replaced Shariah with Secularism, And Called It “Progress”
Most Muslim countries today are ruled not by Qur’an and Sunnah, but by man-made laws copied from colonial regimes. We’re told that Shariah is too harsh, too backward, too “extreme.” But is that what the Prophet ﷺ taught? Is that what built a civilisation that lasted over a thousand years?
Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) once said:
“We were the lowest of people, and Allah gave us honour through Islam. If we seek honour in anything other than Islam, Allah will humiliate us.”
Look at us now. Humiliated. Divided. Silent. Begging for help from the very institutions that destroyed our lands.
What’s the Solution?
This isn’t just about anger or sadness. It’s about direction. The Prophet ﷺ didn’t just come to teach us how to pray. He came to build a society. To rule by justice. To protect the weak. To lead the world with truth.
“Whoever dies without having a bay’ah (pledge of allegiance) on his neck dies the death of Jahiliyyah.”
(Sahih Muslim)
The Khilafah isn’t a dream, it’s a command. Like Salah. Like Zakah. And until we understand that, and work for its return, our pain will continue.
Final Words
We need to stop loving our chains. Stop defending the systems that broke us. Stop pretending that comfort is victory.
Allah’s way is always better. Always just. Always complete. The Qur’an isn’t just for the masjid, it’s for life, society, and leadership.
We owe it to ourselves and to every oppressed Muslim in the world to wake up, speak up, and call for Islam to return as the system that guides us.
Because we can’t afford another hundred years like the last one.
