Introduction

Prophet Ibrahim (AS), also known as Abraham, is a central figure in Islam, revered for his unwavering connection with Allah (swt) and his commitment to monotheism (Tawheed), submitting to the will of Allah (swt) and establishing His (swt) command. His life is a profound narrative of dedication, sacrifice, and steadfastness in the face of adversity. This article will explore the story of Ibrahim (AS), focusing on his mission to call people to Tawheed, his trials, and his exemplary submission to Allah’s (swt) commands.

Call to Tawheed in a Polytheistic Society

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was born into a society steeped in idol worship and polytheism. His own father, Azar, was a prominent idol maker. Despite this, Ibrahim (AS) instinctively rejected the notion of worshipping idols, questioning how lifeless statues could have any power or influence over the affairs of the world.

From a young age, Ibrahim (AS) displayed a profound understanding and inclination towards monotheism. He openly challenged his people and his father, urging them to abandon their idols and worship the One True God, Allah (swt). In the Quran, his arguments against idol worship are highlighted:

“He said to his father and his people, ‘What are these statues you devoted to?’ They said, ‘We found our forefathers worshipping them.’ He said, ‘Indeed, you and your forefathers have been in manifest error.’”

(Surah Al-Anbya, 21:52–54)

“When he said to his father, “My dear father, why do you worship something that does neither hear nor see, nor help you in any way? My dear father, indeed there has come to me a knowledge that has not come to you; so, follow me, and I shall lead you to a straight path. My dear father, do not worship the Satan. The Satan is surely rebellious to the All-Merciful, (Allah).”

(Surah Maryam, 19:42–44)

Despite facing hostility and rejection from his community, Ibrahim (AS) remained steadfast. His call to Tawheed’ was not merely a rejection of idols but an invitation to recognise the sovereignty and oneness of Allah (swt).

Steadfastness on the Command of Allah

One of the most significant episodes in the life of Ibrahim (AS) is his confrontation with King Nimrod, a powerful ruler who claimed divinity. Ibrahim (AS) fearlessly debated with Nimrod, demonstrating the impotence and idiocy of the king’s claim to be a god by showing that only Allah (swt) can give life and death.

Another pivotal moment was the event of the great fire. When Ibrahim (AS) destroyed the idols in the temple, the people, enraged, threw him into a massive fire. However, by the will of Allah (swt), the fire became cool and safe for Ibrahim (AS), a miraculous event that underscored his unwavering trust in Allah (swt) and Allah’s (swt) protection over him:

“They said, ‘Burn him and help your gods — if you are to take action.’ Allah said, ‘O fire, be cold and safe for Ibrahim.”

(Surah Al-Anbya, 21:68–69)

Dedication to Establishing the Commands of Allah

Ibrahim’s (AS) dedication to Allah is exemplified in the story of the near-sacrifice of his son, Ismail (AS). After many years of longing for a child, Allah (swt) blessed Ibrahim (AS) and his wife Hajar with a son, Ismail (AS). However, Allah tested Ibrahim (AS) with a profound command — to sacrifice his beloved son.

With absolute submission, both Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) prepared to fulfill Allah’s (swt) command. Just as Ibrahim (AS) was about to carry out the sacrifice, Allah (swt) intervened, providing a ram to be sacrificed instead:

“Thereafter, when he (the boy) reached an age in which he could work with him, he (Ibrāhīm) said, ‘O my little son, I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you, so consider, what is your opinion?’ He said, ‘O my dear father, do what you have been commanded to do. You will find me, inshā’allah (if Allah wills), one of those who endure patiently.’ So when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, and then we called to him, ‘O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision.’ Indeed, this is how We reward those who are good in their deeds. Indeed, this was the clear trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.”

(Surah As-Saffat, 37:102–107)

The story of Ibrahim (as) highlights and demonstrates the ultimate act of submission and trust in Allah (swt), highlighting the importance of obedience and sacrifice in the path of faith.

The Importance of Steadfastness on Allah’s (swt) Command

It has been narrated on the authority of Jabir b. ‘Abdullah who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: A group of people from my Ummah will continue to fight In defence of truth and remain triumphant until the Day of judgement.

(Muslim 1923)

In the modern world, the lessons from the life of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) remain profoundly relevant for Muslims. The importance of steadfastness on Allah’s (swt) command cannot be overstated, especially in an era where moral and spiritual challenges are prevalent. Here are a few key reasons why maintaining steadfastness is crucial:

  • Moral Clarity and Integrity: In the kufr’ dominated world, filled with flawed subjective morals and ethical ambiguity, adhering to the commands of Allah (swt) provides a clear and unwavering objective moral compass. It helps Muslims navigate right from wrong and maintain integrity even when societal norms shift.

  • Resilience: Steadfastness in belief equips Muslims with the spiritual resilience needed to face life’s challenges. Just as Ibrahim (AS) was unwavering in his trust in Allah (swt) during his trials, Muslims today can find strength and patience during personal and collective hardships.

  • Unity and Community Strength: A steadfast commitment to the teachings of Islam prescribes unity amongst the Muslims. By collectively adhering to the commands of Allah (swt), the Ummah (Muslim community) can support and uplift one another, promoting a cohesive and supportive environment and establishing the command of Allah (swt) as it should be established.

Conclusion

The story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) is a timeless testament to the virtues of Tawheed, steadfastness, and dedication to Allah’s (swt) commands. His life serves as an inspiration for Muslims to uphold the oneness of Allah (swt), remain strong in the face of trials, and be unwavering in their dedication and obedience. Through his example, we learn the profound impact of true devotion and the immense rewards that come with steadfast belief in Allah.

“Indeed, those who have declared: ‘Our Lord is Allah’, then remained steadfast, on them the angels will descend, saying, ‘Do not fear, and do not grieve; and be happy with the good news of the Jannah (Paradise) that you had been promised’.”
